Salem Set to Host 7 NCAA Championships in 12 Months

Home Posted on November 07, 2024

Earlier this fall, the City of Salem learned that the 2027 Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl and the 2028 Women’s D-III Basketball Championship would be returning to Salem. But before the city and its valued partners can turn their attention to the future, they must focus on the present. Salem is set to host 7 NCAA National Championships between December 2024 and December 2025.

“This will be an exciting time for all of us involved with these championships,” said Carey Harveycutter, Salem’s Tourism Director. “We have been hosting these marquee events for more than three decades and we know it takes a village to create a memorable championship experience for the student-athletes, the coaches, and fans.”

Harveycutter has been the Game Manager or Tournament Director for each of the 103 NCAA National Championship events the city has hosted since December of 1993, on both Division II and Division III levels. Salem’s partner through all the D-III championships has been the Old Dominion Athletic Conference and the Mountain East has filled that designation for the D-II championships.

The ODAC and the state-of-the-art Cregger Center at Roanoke College will begin host duties for this string of 7 national title events in 12 months this December when Women’s D-III Volleyball returns to Salem for the first time in nearly 20 years. In 2005 and 2006 Salem and the ODAC hosted these contests at the Salem Civic Center.

“We are thrilled to have women’s volleyball back in Salem because the interest in this sport is truly tremendous,” said John Shaner, Salem Parks and Recreation Director. “We hope all the area high school, middle school, recreation league and travel team players will mark their calendars and join us at the Cregger Center December 4-7. The caliber of play at this level is phenomenal.”

Once the calendars flip to 2025, Salem and Roanoke College will host Women’s D-III Basketball in March and Men’s D-III Volleyball in April with both taking place at the Cregger Center. Then in May, the action will shift outside on the Roanoke College campus as D-II and D-III Women’s Lacrosse will stage a Combined Championship Weekend at Kerr Stadium.

“Salem is glad that it was able to step-in when the original site could not host these lacrosse contests,” Harveycutter said.  “This shows the commitment the NCAA has to Salem, and it magnifies the enormous trust it has in Roanoke College, the ODAC, and the Mountain East. This is truly a team effort.”

In addition, to the previous competitions mentioned, the City of Salem and Roanoke College will host both Men’s and Women’s D-III Soccer Championships in December of 2025.
