BONSAI CLASS WITH JACKIE FUJIKAWA
Mr. Fujikawa was born and raised in Japan and came to the United States in his youth. He was taught by his father and is experienced in the Japanese culture and tradition. He has been involved in teaching and consulting the techniques of Bonsai and Japanese gardening. The Bonsai class will focus on care and maintenance and teach all the basics of bonsai design. Select a tree, learn how to prune, transplant, landscape with rocks, and discover what the art of bonsai is all about as you create your very own bonsai to enjoy at home.
When: Monday, September 9 – October 14, 2024, 6:00 pm – 7:15 pm
Location: Salem Senior Center (front room) Not just for seniors, but for all adults, 16 and over.
Cost: $15 for the class (Instructor will give you a list of the things you will need to purchase and the cost for this could be anywhere from $40 to $100, depending on the size of pot, etc. that you purchase. All supplies can be purchased from Lowe’s, Walmart, Amazon, etc.)
Participants to hold class – 5 minimum and 10 maximum
Description: 6-week class 1 ½ hours
- Week 1 – Introduction and directional guidance
- Week 2 – Concept and Technique 1
- Week 3 – Concept and Technique 2
- Week 4 – Preparation and visions
- Week 5 – Practice and evaluation
- Week 6 – Practice and summary

CERAMICS CLASS WITH TAMMY POWELL
Join Tammy for a fun evening of Ceramics. Clean, paint or glaze, and then have your pieces fired to use at home, give to your family or friends. We will provide the first piece for you to work on and after that you will need to purchase your pieces from Tammy or the ceramic shop.
When: Monday, September 9 – November 11, 2024 (10 weeks)
Time: 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm
Location: Salem Senior Center (front building) Not just for seniors, but for all adults, 16 and over.
Cost: $50 for the class. Cost includes 1 piece to begin, all the paints you need (unless you want specialty paint), and then you will need to purchase other pieces to work on through Tammy or at the ceramic shop.

CHAIR YOGA CLASS WITH RACHEL DEVAUGHN
Chair yoga uses modified yoga poses that can be done sitting in or standing behind a chair. It’s an excellent fitness class for anyone who cannot transition to the floor possibly due to a knee replacement, etc. This class is taught by an experienced instructor who is excellent in this area.
When: Wednesdays, beginning August 7, 2024
Time: 6:45 pm – 7:45 pm
Location: Salem Senior Center back room. (Not just for seniors, but for all adults,16 and over.)
Cost: Cost for all evening classes……..are as follows:
- If taking one fitness class per week for 2 months - $30
- If taking two fitness classes per week for 2 months - $50
- If taking three or more fitness classes per week for 2 months - $70.

- City employees may take classes for ½ price.
Payment is made Jan/Feb, March/April, May/June, July/Aug, Sept/Oct, Nov/Dec. Since this class begins in August pay ½ price for August and then pay again for Sept/Oct the first of Sept.
Payments are made directly to the instructor or the evening supervisor at the building by cash or check made to City of Salem.

PICKLEBALL CLASS WITH MITZI TIANGLIA
Learn to play the game that’s become the latest craze. Pickleball is fun, social and friendly! The rules are simple and the game is easy for beginners to learn, but can develop into a fast-paced, competitive game.
Pickleball is best described as a combination of badminton, ping-pong and tennis. You can play indoors or outdoors on a badminton-sized court with a net similar to a tennis net. Players use a paddle that is reminiscent of ping-pong paddles, but are bigger and usually made of more advanced materials.
When: Mondays, beginning August 19 (4 weeks) 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm or Saturdays, beginning August 17 (4 weeks) 8:30 am – 9:30 am
Location: Salem Parks and Recreation courts near the Youth Sports Office on Union Street. (Ages 16 and over)
Cost: Free. We also provide the rackets and balls for you to learn but we feel sure you’ll buy your own after you learn to play.
