Social Services to Offer Financial Relief

Beginning July 13, the Roanoke County Department of Social Services will offer short term financial assistance made possible through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act). Residents of Roanoke County, Town of Vinton and City of Salem may apply to aid in paying expenses directly related to a loss of income from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Funds will be distributed on a first come, first served basis, and will be available for unpaid bills as of March 1, 2020 through December 30, 2020. The assistance includes, but is not limited to the following:
• Unpaid utilities
• Unpaid car payments and unpaid car insurance
• Unmet child care
• Unpaid medical expenses

Total Action for Progress (TAP) will offer assistance for rent or mortgage payments.

Residents should refer to the website for more detailed information and to download an application for assistance. Applications may also be obtained from the Department of Social Services at 220 East Main Street, Salem, Virginia 24153. The drive-thru window is open 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Lobby hours are 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Residents may also call the Department at (540) 387-6087.
