Salem Receives Keep Virginia Beautiful Grant

Keep Virginia Beautiful is awarding its annual “30 in 30 Green Grants” one each day in the month of June, for a total of thirty grants.  The City of Salem, will receive a grant award of $1000 for its Community Beautification project.  Congratulations to Salem Horticulurist Jeff Ceasar and his dedicated staff.

Government, non-profit, civic and service organizations in Virginia were invited to apply for grants for $500 to $1,000 describing how they plan to tackle an environmental concern in their community regarding Litter Prevention, Recycling, Cigarette Litter Prevention, or Community Beautification.

Since 2011, Keep Virginia Beautiful has provided $230,000 for 290 different environmental projects and programs all across the Commonwealth, due to the generosity this year of our partner Altria, as well as additional support from Keep America Beautiful and Coca-Cola.

The Beautification Division of the City of Salem will take on the project of restoring their WWI Memorial green space, which has been in need of improvements for many years.  They will use the grant funds to restore the area and plant poppies, roses, an oak tree, and tall grasses, indicative of World War memorial gardens.  The Roanoke/Salem American Legion Post is excited about the refurbishment of this area and will provide volunteers for the project.

The mission at Keep Virginia Beautiful is to engage and unite Virginians to improve our natural and scenic environment.  We believe in a shared responsibility to end littering, improve recycling, and beautify communities.
