Lengthy Fire at Salem Frame Company

The Salem Fire & EMS Department responded to a structure fire at 1972 Salem Industrial Dr. this morning at approximately 10:47 a.m. When firefighters arrived at Salem Frame Company, they found light smoke throughout the building. Upon further investigation, several fires were discovered in the facility’s dust collection system.

The first units arrived within seven minutes of receiving the call and they worked for more than six hours removing and extinguishing all the fire in the system. Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the collection system and there was no other damage to the building.

One firefighter sustained a minor injury, as firefighters were cleaning-up after the fire was extinguished. The company’s employees were evacuated prior to the arrival of the first unit.

Approximately 34 personnel from the Salem Fire & EMS Department (Truck 1, Engine 2, Engine 3, Medic 801, Medic 802, Medic 803, Medic 804, Battalion 1 & Fire Medic 1) and the Roanoke County Fire & Rescue Department (Wagon 9, Air 9, Utility 9 & Battalion 1) responded to the call.  Personnel from the Roanoke Fire & EMS Department (Engine 14) assisted with handling additional emergency calls, while crews were on scene.

The Salem Fire Marshal’s Office determined the fire to be accidental and there is no damage estimate at this time.
