The new Pickleball courts are now open! The fastest growing sport in the US is now available to play in Salem. There are six courts available, and they are the only lighted courts in the valley! In honor of the opening today, I thought I could share some facts about Pickle Ball.

Pickleball is similar to tennis and table tennis. It can be played by two or four players by hitting a ball, similar to a wiffle ball, over a net with large paddles.

The game was invented in the 1960s as a children’s backyard game.

The inventor of Pickleball is Joel Pritchard, who was a U.S. House of Representatives member and the Lieutenant Governor of Washington.

The Pritchards named the game Pickleball because the paddles were made from left over plywood in their shed. This reminded Joan Pritchard of pickle boats.

The Pritchards named their family dog Pickles, after the game.

A few players from the courts today said the game is similar to a fast paced tennis match. They have been playing for two years and are retired tennis players.

We hope you have a blast playing on the new courts!
