The Planning Commission of the City of Salem considers matters relating to land use, zoning, and various municipal plans such as the Comprehensive Plan. It also provides an opportunity for citizens to be involved in land use decisions and the planning process by conducting required public hearings, and other types of outreach to stakeholders. Current members are Chair Vicki Daulton, Denise “Dee” King, Reid Garst, Jackson Beamer and Neil Conner. You can email the commission at planningcommission@salemva.gov.
Section 15.22210 of the Code of Virginia describes the role of the Planning Commission: “Every locality shall by resolution or ordinance create a local planning commission in order to promote the orderly development of the locality and its environs.” Planning Commissions are recommending bodies, which means that their decisions are only recommendations to City Council who has the final say.
Commission meets the Wednesday after the first City Council meeting in a given month, at 7:00 pm in City Council Chambers.
