The City of Salem operates a Class I Community Waterworks. It opened its state-of-the-art water treatment facility on February 22, 2005. It is capable of producing 10 million gallons of drinking water a day for residential and business customers.


Licensure

The Salem Water Treatment Plant Operation consists of 10 Class I Waterworks Operators and 3 Class II Waterworks Operators.


Awards

2016 Gold Award- Virginia Department of Health Office of Drinking Water

The Salem Water Treatment Plant received the Gold Award for Excellence in Waterworks Operations and Performance from the Virginia Department of Health Office of Drinking Water. This prestigious award recognizes water treatment facilities in Virginia that operate in an exemplary manner and provide water quality that exceeds all of the minimum regulatory standards.

2016 Hands-On Training Award- Virginia Department of Health and Virginia Tech

The Salem Water Treatment Plant received the award for outstanding service and excellent instruction in providing Hands-On Training at a Full Scale Water Plant from Virginia Tech and the Virginia Department of Health.

2016 Water Fluoridation Quality Award- Centers for Disease Control & Prevention

The award recognizes community water systems that provide consistent, high-quality water fluoridation practices and meet stringent community water fluoridation requirements.
