The City of Salem is conducting smoke tests of its sanitary sewer system from October 25, 2021 to November 19, 2021.
A “SMOKE TEST” assists our inspection crews in locating breaks and defects in the sewer system. The white or gray colored smoke, you may see coming from the vent stacks on houses or holes in the ground, is not toxic and it is odorless. It does not stain anything, and it is not a fire hazard.
The smoke should not enter your home unless you have defective plumbing or dried-up drain traps. It is advisable for the homeowner to pour a gallon of water into each floor drain prior to testing. If smoke enters your home, there is good reason to assume that dangerous sewer gases may also be entering your home or business. You should evacuate immediately and notify our inspectors. If you are not home and discover smoke when you return, please call the City of Salem Water Department at (540) 375-3029 or Eric Price with CHA at (540) 239-6731.
IMPORTANT! If there is an individual in your home or business who has respiratory problems or is immobile, please notify one of the parties above prior to testing.
