Salem Announces New Park Restrictions

Salem Parks and Recreation Logo

Parks and Recreation facilities in the City of Salem will only remain open if  – YOU DO YOUR PART!  All visitors to our parks in Salem must practice responsible social distancing!

In collaboration with the Salem Health Department, Virginia Department of Health and Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation we have developed the following guidelines to assure the health and safety of our citizens.

Guidelines and Current Restrictions for visiting the parks:

People may visit a local park in Salem to engage in physical and outdoor activity, however, current guidelines and restrictions are in place through June 10th in alignment with Governor Ralph Northam’s Stay at Home Executive Order.

Guidelines:

  • The Greenway and walking trails remain open
  • The parks can be used for activities such as biking, walking, running, boating, and hiking.
  • Strict social distancing requirements must be followed.
  • Stay close to home and keep visits short
  • Restrooms are closed. Please plan to ‘go before you go’
  • Bring your own hand sanitizer to use during visits.
  • You must keep a distance of at least 6 feet from others at all times. While on trails, alert others of your presence and step aside to let others pass at a safe distance
  • Items brought to the park must go home with you

Restrictions:

  • Picnic shelters, amphitheaters and other outdoor facility rentals will be canceled and facilities closed.
  • Groups or gatherings of more than 10 people are prohibited.
  • All in-person programs and events are canceled.
  • All common areas including playgrounds and basketball courts are closed.
  • The Moyer Skate Park is closed.

PLEASE NOTE: if you are sick or have been around someone who is sick and is experiencing symptoms consistent with the COVID-19 infection – PLEASE STAY HOME.

Keep in mind that you are recreating in a public space. While we are making increased efforts toward sanitation, each surface is only as clean as the last person who touched it. Therefore, take steps to protect your health by following these guidelines provided by the Virginia Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control:

  • Wash your hands regularly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds at a time.
  • Avoid touching your face.
  • If you’re sick with any ailment, stay home. Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • When in public, maintain a social distance of at least six feet from others.
  • Cover your cough and sneeze with a tissue, then throw it away. If you don’t have a tissue, use your elbow.
  • Clean surfaces you touch regularly.

As always, we have the safety and well-being of our visitors and staff in mind. We continue to monitor the situation with COVID-19, and this page will be updated as new information becomes available.
