Smoke Testing of Sewer Lines

Smoke Testing of Sewer Lines
Sunday Morning October 4, 2009

Smoke testing will be performed on the sewer collection system beginning at 7am on Sunday, October 4 at the intersection of 4th St. and West Main St. working east down 4th St. to its intersection with Union St.   To prepare for this testing, pour water in all your drains, including garage and basement drains.  This will ensure full traps and minimize the possibility of the test smoke from entering your home.  A door hanger will be hung on the front door of all properties in the immediate vicinity of the testing and businesses will be notified.

During the testing period a white tracer smoke may be seen coming from roof vents, building foundations, or manhole covers. The smoke will not enter your home if it is properly plumbed and vented and if the traps in floor drains are filled with water.  The smoke used for these tests is non-toxic and is not combustible, nor will it damage vegetation or other materials.  The smoke tracer from the testing may set off fire alarms.  If you discover the smoke tracer entering your home, please call the City of Salem Water and Sewer Department at 540- 375-3029 or Olver Incorporated at 540-239-6731.  Please avoid unnecessary exposure to the smoke.
