70 Years of Service
The Salem Life Saving Crew was organized November 15, 1932, the second volunteer crew to be organized in the world patterned after the Roanoke Life Saving & First Aid Crew, which was organized in 1928 by Julian Stanley Wise. Minor W. Oakey was the first captain of the Salem Crew. Although the name has changed to the Salem Rescue Squad, the dedication & tradition still lives on 70 years later, providing service to the City of Salem and surrounding areas.
