Parks and Recreation

The Department of Parks & Recreation provides the citizens of Salem with year round programs and activities, which are geared for all ages.  Programs are divided into: Senior Citizens Center, James I. Moyer Sports Complex/Kiwanis Field, Adult Sports, Youth Sports, Community Activities and Special Events.  The programs are operated  with a full-time staff of 16 and a number of part-time staff such as field maintenance workers, instructors, game officials, summer special event workers, summer interns, sports clinic leaders, and volunteer coaches.

Our mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of citizens through professionally managed recreation programs, tournaments, and special events that foster economic impact, promote healthy lifestyles, social interaction, and civic pride among participants.

Want a great way to kick off the Christmas season?  Visit the Salem Farmers Market at 6 p.m. and watch as we light up the Salem Christmas Tree. The Salem Christmas Parade to begin at 6:30 p.m. on Main Street.

Ready for a great day of Christmas activities?  The City of Salem Parks & Recreation has a way for the Christmas spirit to fill you up.  Come down from 11-4 p.m. and get into the holiday spirit. 

Salem Farmers Market – Market Vendors, Craft Vendors, and Carriage Rides around downtown

The “Gingerbread Festival” will be held at Salem Library presented by the Salem Roanoke Chamber.  Take pictures with Santa, children’s activities, several vendors and hot cider.

Winter Beachfest On-sale - Mon, Dec 14
Park & Rec Winter Beachfest Ticket On-Sale

The City of Salem Parks and Recreation Department along with Salem Terrace, & Q99-FM are all set to present the 9th annual “Winter Beachfest” on Friday, January 29th, 2016, at the Salem Civic Center. The popular group “The Band of Oz” will be in town to help melt away the winter cold with a little summertime fun.  Doors open at 5 p.m. and the music will begin at 6 p.m.

Tickets go on sale December 14th at the Salem Parks & Recreation Department (620 Florida Street). Admission is $8 in advance and $10 at the door – cash and checks only. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Penguin Club’s community service projects.

This event has sold out for last several years, so make sure to come get your tickets before we run out.

The Salem Parks & Recreation offices will be closed on December 24th & 25th for Christmas Day. We will open back up on Monday, December 28th.
