Parks and Recreation

The Department of Parks & Recreation provides the citizens of Salem with year round programs and activities, which are geared for all ages.  Programs are divided into: Senior Citizens Center, James I. Moyer Sports Complex/Kiwanis Field, Adult Sports, Youth Sports, Community Activities and Special Events.  The programs are operated  with a full-time staff of 16 and a number of part-time staff such as field maintenance workers, instructors, game officials, summer special event workers, summer interns, sports clinic leaders, and volunteer coaches.

Our mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of citizens through professionally managed recreation programs, tournaments, and special events that foster economic impact, promote healthy lifestyles, social interaction, and civic pride among participants.

9th Annual Star BQ

featuring:  Montgomery Gentry

Star-BQ tickets go on sale 10 a.m. on August 3rd at the Salem Parks & Recreation Department, which is located at 620 Florida St. in Salem. 

Tickets for the event are just $15 and kids three-and-under will be admitted free.  Gates open at 5 p.m., the music begins at 6 p.m. and the event will end at 9 p.m.

The event also will feature bar-b-q restaurants from around the valley giving out samples of their delicious bar-b-q and selling dinner plates and desserts.  For additional information call Salem Parks and Recreation at 540-375-3057.

"Salem Distance Run" - Saturday, August 8th

Come run the 41st anniversary of the Salem Distance Run. Run begins on Main Street and finishes at Longwood Park. The distance run has races distances of 10k, 5k, & 3k poker walk. Come join running celebrity Josh Wardian,  Ultra Marathon runner & USA Track & Field runner of the year in 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011.

To register for the race:

2. Mail the registration & payment
3. Sign up day of the race.  You can register on August 7th-8th.

About the Movie:
After a construction project begins in their neighborhood, best friends Tuck, Alex and Munch begin receiving strange, encoded messages on their cell phones. They immediately inform their parents and the authorities, but when no one takes them seriously, the youths decide to crack the code themselves and trace the messages to their source. The youths' curiosity leads them to a robotic extraterrestrial who desperately needs their help.

Admission is free!! Starts at dark.  Bring chairs and a blanket and join us for a movie under the stars!! Concessions will be available to purchase from Fun Times.  The first 50 families will receive a free bag of popcorn from Frito Lay.
