Parks and Recreation

The Department of Parks & Recreation provides the citizens of Salem with year round programs and activities, which are geared for all ages.  Programs are divided into: Senior Citizens Center, James I. Moyer Sports Complex/Kiwanis Field, Adult Sports, Youth Sports, Community Activities and Special Events.  The programs are operated  with a full-time staff of 16 and a number of part-time staff such as field maintenance workers, instructors, game officials, summer special event workers, summer interns, sports clinic leaders, and volunteer coaches.

Our mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of citizens through professionally managed recreation programs, tournaments, and special events that foster economic impact, promote healthy lifestyles, social interaction, and civic pride among participants.

Upcoming Events

Youth Spring Sports Registrations Ends - Sun, Feb 15

Last day to register for one of our youth spring sports leagues.

The following leagues will be offered during our spring sports season:

  • Boys Soccer:  Ages 6 - 11
  • Boys Baseball:  Ages 6 - 14
  • Girls Softball:  Ages 13 - 16

Participant's must either reside in the City of Salem or be currently enrolled in a City of Salem school to be eligible.  Cost: $40 residents, $90 non-resident tuition paying students.  For more information please email or call (540) 375-4094.  To register online click here.

Calling all children from ages 3-10!!  Come to Longwood Park from 1-4 p.m. to hunt for eggs, get your picture made with the Easter Bunny, enjoy activities and a few snacks.  Enjoy some of the new activities that we have in store.

2015 Chance Crawford Tournament - Fri, Apr 17 - Sun, Apr 19

 2015 Chance Crawford Tournament- April 17th-19th, 2015

The Chance Crawford Benefit Softball Tournament began 32 years ago to help a young Salem High School quarterback, Chance Crawford, who suffered a tragic spinal cord injury in a high school football game. Chance continues to make contributions to the community by allowing the tournament to be played in his name to help others. All proceeds are now used to help many different worthy causes and give several college scholarships.

Location: Salem Farmers Market

Admission: $5, children 12 and under are free. 

Come to listen to live music from 5:30-9 p.m. and dance the night away. Bring a chair and blanket while enjoying food from local vendors at our Food Court.  There are plenty of activities for children as well.

64th Annual Earnest "Pig" Robertson Fishing Rodeo
Saturday, April 25th 9a.m.-12p.m.
Children Ages 3-8 Day

Children between the ages of 3-8 are encouraged to come fish some beautiful trout from the Lake Spring Pond.

The Fishing Rodeo is a safe place for kids to be able to fish.  Children are allowed to catch & keep up to 6 trout.  They must bring their own equipment and adults are not allowed to fish for them.

Prizes will be given out throught the day and trophys will be given for the best fisherman.
