Parks and Recreation

The Department of Parks & Recreation provides the citizens of Salem with year round programs and activities, which are geared for all ages.  Programs are divided into: Senior Citizens Center, James I. Moyer Sports Complex/Kiwanis Field, Adult Sports, Youth Sports, Community Activities and Special Events.  The programs are operated  with a full-time staff of 16 and a number of part-time staff such as field maintenance workers, instructors, game officials, summer special event workers, summer interns, sports clinic leaders, and volunteer coaches.

Our mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of citizens through professionally managed recreation programs, tournaments, and special events that foster economic impact, promote healthy lifestyles, social interaction, and civic pride among participants.

The Salem Parks & Recreation offices will be closed on Friday, July 3rd to observe the July 4th weekend. We will open back up Monday, July 6th.

Come to Longwood Park from 3- 9:30 p.m. Bring your chairs, a blanket, and a picnic and join us for some of the area's best Jazz music!! Food will be available to purchase from several area vendors.

Bands to perform throughout the day are to be determined.  Keep checking back with us to see what bands will be performing.

Free family, friendly kids activities from 4-7 p.m. presented by Salem Art Center, Taubman Museum, Salem VA & YMCA.

Admission: $5, children 12 and under are free. 

Come to listen to live music from and dance the night away. Bring a chair and blanket while enjoying food from local vendors at our Food Court.  There are plenty of activities for children as well.

2015 ASA/USA 14U Girls Softball National Championship - Sun, Jul 26 - Sat, Aug 01
2015 ASA/USA 14U National Girls Softball Championship 

July 26th-August 1st, 2015

The National Championship Tournament is back again in the Roanoke Valley for the 2015 season.  Come watch these amazing, talented 14U girls from all over the country battle it out to win the National Championships.  The opening ceremonies will begin on July 26th and the first game will be played the 27th.  Teams will be playing all over the Roanoke Valley and with the Championship game being played at Moyer Sports Complex on August 1st.

"Salem Distance Run" - Saturday, August 8th

Come run the 40th anniversary of the Salem Distance Run. Run begins on Main Street and finishes at Longwood Park. The distance run has races distances of 10k, 5k, & 3k poker walk.
