Parks and Recreation

The Department of Parks & Recreation provides the citizens of Salem with year round programs and activities, which are geared for all ages.  Programs are divided into: Senior Citizens Center, James I. Moyer Sports Complex/Kiwanis Field, Adult Sports, Youth Sports, Community Activities and Special Events.  The programs are operated  with a full-time staff of 16 and a number of part-time staff such as field maintenance workers, instructors, game officials, summer special event workers, summer interns, sports clinic leaders, and volunteer coaches.

Our mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of citizens through professionally managed recreation programs, tournaments, and special events that foster economic impact, promote healthy lifestyles, social interaction, and civic pride among participants.

"Dolphin Tales 2"

About the Movie:
Several years have passed since Sawyer Nelson and the team at Clearwater Marine Hospital gave Winter the dolphin a prosthetic tail, thereby saving her life. Now however, a new crisis has arisen. Winter's elderly surrogate mother, Panama, has died, which leaves Winter without a pool mate. According to USDA regulations, dolphins cannot be housed alone; unless a new companion can be found quickly, Clearwater will lose Winter to another aquarium.

Admission is free!! Starts at dark.  Bring chairs and a blanket and join us for a movie under the stars!! Concessions will be available to purchase from Fun Times. First 50 families will receive a free bag of popcorn from Frito Lay.

Youth Fall Sports Registrations Ends - Sun, Jun 14

Today is the last day to register for one of our youth fall sports leagues.  

The following leagues will be offered during our fall sports season:

  • Flag Football (Co-Ed):  Ages 6-7 
  • Boys Football:  Ages 7-12
  • Boys Soccer:  Ages 12-15
  • Girls Cheerleading:  Ages 6-12
  • Girls Soccer:  Ages 6-15

Participant's must either reside in the City of Salem or be currently enrolled in a City of Salem school to be eligible.  Cost: $40 residents, $90 non-resident tuition paying students.  For more information please email athletics@salemva.gov or call (540) 375-4094.  To register online click here.

"Million Dollar Arm"

About the movie:
MIllion Dollar Arm is about a sports agent named J.B. Bernstein, who plans to find baseball's next star pitcher. He heads to India to find a cricket player whom he can nurture into a major league star. With the help of a scout, J.B. finds teens Dinesh and Rinku, who haven't a clue about baseball but throw powerful pitches. As the boys adjust to American life, J.B. learns valuable lessons about teamwork and family.
