Parks and Recreation

The Department of Parks & Recreation provides the citizens of Salem with year round programs and activities, which are geared for all ages.  Programs are divided into: Senior Citizens Center, James I. Moyer Sports Complex/Kiwanis Field, Adult Sports, Youth Sports, Community Activities and Special Events.  The programs are operated  with a full-time staff of 16 and a number of part-time staff such as field maintenance workers, instructors, game officials, summer special event workers, summer interns, sports clinic leaders, and volunteer coaches.

Our mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of citizens through professionally managed recreation programs, tournaments, and special events that foster economic impact, promote healthy lifestyles, social interaction, and civic pride among participants.

Admission is free!! The movie starts at dark.  Bring chairs and a blanket and join us for a movie under the stars!! Concessions will be available to purchase from Fun Times. First 50 families will receive a free bag of popcorn from Frito Lay.

Salem After Five - Friday, August 12th, 5:30-9 p.m.

Featuring: Jim Quick & the Coastline

Location: Salem Farmers Market

Admission: $5, children 12 and under are free. 

Come to listen to live music from 5:30-9 p.m. and dance the night away. Bring a chair and blanket while enjoying food from local vendors at our Food Court.  There are plenty of activities for children as well.

Salem Distance Run - Sat, Aug 13
"Salem Distance Run" - Saturday, August 13th

Come run the 42nd anniversary of the Salem Distance Run. Run begins on Main Street and finishes at Longwood Park. The distance run has races distances of 10k, 5k, & 3k poker walk.

To register for the race:
1. Sign up online
2. Mail the registration & payment
3. Sign up day of the race. 

Packet pick up is Friday, August 12th from 5 p.m.-9 p.m. If you have any questions, please contact Lina Guilliams at 540-444-2925 x200.

10th Annual Star-BQ - Thursday, September 1st, 5-9 p.m.

Featuring: Chase Bryant & Rutledge

Tickets for the event are just $12 in advance & $15 day of the event. Kids three-and-under will be admitted free.  Gates open at 5 p.m., the music begins at 6 p.m. and the event will end at 9 p.m. Proceeds benefit the Salem Rotary Club’s charitable endeavors.

Tickets go on sale Friday, July 30th at 10 a.m. through Ticketmaster. Click here to purchase tickets.
