Chief Pat Counts

Chief Chester G. "Pat" Counts started in public safety as a volunteer member of Salem Rescue Squad in 1973, advancing from EMT-Basic to Paramedic. He began his career with Salem Fire Department in 1974. Moving through the years and ranks, he was appointed Fire Chief on September 10, 2001.
In his nearly 40 years' service, Chief Counts has seen many positive changes. Salem Fire-EMS now provide such varied services as Hazardous Materials, Technical Rescue, and Emergency Medical Services.
Chief Counts is a member of Virginia Fire Chiefs Association, International Fire Chiefs Association and serves on the Virginia Fire Services Council and is proud to have served his country through the U.S. Army Reserves. In addition to his role as Fire Chief, he currently serves as the Emergency Management Coordinator for the City of Salem.
