Earlier today, Salem Police charged Richard Earl Godley, 45, of Roanoke with one misdemeanor count of leaving the scene of an accident and one misdemeanor count of reckless driving. These charges stem from an investigation into the hit-and-run incident that occurred at some point late Sunday night or early Monday morning at the intersection of College Avenue and Roanoke Boulevard.

Godley was apparently heading south on College Avenue and attempting to make a left hand turn onto the Boulevard when the 2001 Dodge Durango SUV he was driving struck the cannon. The World War I relic sustained significant damage as a result of the crash and initial repair estimates indicate it will cost several thousand dollars to return it back to its display condition.
