Damian Preston Wright, 35, the victim of the shooting that occurred at the Oak Park Apartments on September 20, passed away Wednesday evening at a local hospital. His body has been taken to the Medical Examiner’s office in Roanoke.

Last Friday night, at approximately 9:33 p.m., officers from the Salem Police Department responded to a “shots fired” call in a parking lot of the Oak Park Apartments, which are located in the 100 block of Otter Avenue. At 9:34 p.m., the first officer arrived on the scene and observed a male subject lying in the parking lot with a gunshot wound. The victim was later identified as Wright. He was transported to a local hospital with life threatening injuries.

After a subsequent police investigation, a suspect was identified and later arrested. Roanoke City and Salem Police located Jasper Reed Jackson of Bedford at a residence in Roanoke early Saturday morning. He was charged with Aggravated Malicious Wounding, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Failure to Appear, Assault & Battery of a Law Enforcement Officer, and Obstruction of Justice. Jackson is currently being held at the Roanoke County/Salem Jail without bond.

The investigation is ongoing and additional charges could be forthcoming.
